Ice Ice Baby

The Objective

The purpose of my experiment was to determine the melting rate of ice with different concentrations of salt and sugar solutions.

Methods/Materials

20 100 ml plastic cups 4 800mL plastic containers

220g salt NaCl(Ralph's Iodized Salt) WhirlPool Gold Freezer

220g sugar (Pure Cane Sugar) US Balance Professional Mini Scale US Magnum (500gx0.1g)

2,050mL tap water 100g balance calibration weight

5 funnels Stopwatch

5 100 ml graduated cylinders Masking tape

Results

The meting rates were:

Frozen Solutions Melting Rate of Ice (mL/min)

Control 0.20 1%

Salt 0.25 1%

Sugar 0.20 10%

Salt 0.47 10%

Sugar 0.26

Conclusions/Discussion

My conclusion is that salt lowers the freezing point of water more than sugar does which causes it to melt faster.

My project is about determining the melting rates of ice with different substances and concentrations.
